PA (and many other States) allow you to purchase electricity from other than the 'last resort' provider (if you don't have a preferred generator, the local utility provides power).
So last October I signed up with Superior Plus Energy Services and at the time they beat PP&Ls rate by .015 (one and half cents per kwh) which was .0799Kwh. So I think YEAH BOY! Sticking it to the Greedy Electricity Moguls... well, not really, just wanted cheaper electricity.
So I go back today to check rates:
PPL -> .06935
My rate -> .0799
DAMMIT!
And all the news points to even LOWER PP&L rates due to the expected drop in natural gas prices.
So now I have to BREAK my Superior contract (and pay an $84 termination fee).
Its not all that bad.
In the summer I use 2.5KWh. Doing the math:
2500 * .06935 = $173
2500 * .0799 = $200
Thats $27 for approx 3 months = $81 savings.
PLUS PPL is forecasting another rate DECREASE due to cheaper nat. gas prices.
I calculated if I stayed with my current provider I would be over $200 in the 'red'.. and that does not take into account PP&L adjusting rates every quarter... so I expect that PP&L prices will trend LOWER and I would have 'lost' even more money.
Bottom line: SHOP AROUND and KEEP UP on this stuff. I just put $200 in my pocket be looking at a web site and doing 3 easy math problems.
