Reconditioning doors... what to do?

Postby pfarber » Wed Aug 28, 2013 9:26 pm

So I am looking at starting the doors. I have window glass, and seating tape. The regulators work and the handles are good. Hinges are OK, no rust at the bottom seams.

So what should I do to the doors while they are off and apart? Any 'must do' mods or fixes that are easier to do now than when painted back on the cab???

Paul,

Installing the windows can be done now, or later when the door is hung. Things to do now include:

1. knowing that these doors have a tack record of rotting along the bottom, clean out the bottom, and use a chemical rust converter to stop any existing rust, and encapsulate it.
2. use a good liquid seam sealer to seal the bottom seam. Pay particular attention not to foul the weep holes.
3. paint all of the inside surfaces you can get to with a good quality primer. The rustoleum that you posted in another thread appears to be a good choice. You will likely have to use a brush and small roller, rather than a paint gun to do this painting.
